Integrated solid waste management was the topic of discussion at the meeting held at the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia among the Minister Mrs. Maya Tskitishvili, Deputy Minister, Mrs. Mzia Giorgobiani, Deputy Minister, Mr. Grigol Katsia and KfW Regional Office Director for South Caucasus, Mr. Klaus Weigel. The project covers construction and integrated management of landfills in Kakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti. A feasibility study for the project has already been prepared. The plan covers arrangement of a new, regional sanitary landfill of international standards, construction of waste loading stations and a pilot composting plant. The project also covers purchasing cleaning trucks and closure of existing dumpsite. KfW finances the project with EUR 30 mln. The German Bank for Reconstruction and Development helps the Government of Georgia in terms of waste management. KfW has been cooperating with the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia and its sub-agencies for years now. As it was mentioned at the meeting, the parties are planning to further deepen cooperation. Solid waste management is one of the directions of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia. Constructing landfills of international standards is important as it improves sanitary conditions as well as general ecological environment.
